Course Description

This short course utilizes the Team Research Approach originally developed with the University of Arizona.  Its methodology is designed to develop greater depth of understanding of high-purity water treatment issues.  Small groups consisting of 2 or 3 randomly assigned attendees will work independently on different water projects.  Each has learning objectives and a goal that can only be reached by working together with actual water treatment equipment.

The water treatment training will be split almost evenly between project time and traditional classroom training.  The classroom work will cover the theory, operation, maintenance, and design of high-purity water equipment (as detailed herein).   Concepts will be presented with a heavy reliance on graphic animations and equipment simulations to illustrate theoretical concepts.

Who Should Attend?

Although the materials in this course are mostly advanced in nature, the teaching methods used are such that even inexperienced operators, supervisors, or engineers will be able to understand most of it.  The classroom presentations are heavily based in digitally projected animations intended to create mental pictures that assist in learning.  This learning is further reinforced by allowing participants to work with actual equipment in the afternoon sessions.

Reverse Osmosis Pretreatment covers the design of RO pretreatment systems and the optimization of their performance.  Microfiltration and ultrafiltration technologies will be discussed and applied to RO system design.  Pretreatment monitoring and troubleshooting issues are included.

Reverse Osmosis Maintenance offers the knowledge of how to interpret RO performance data and then react to it appropriately.  It will include material on optimizing the effectiveness of an RO cleaning and how to effectively control biological activity.

Reverse Osmosis Optimization provides the subtleties necessary for fine-tuning RO performance and troubleshooting RO problems.  Its sessions will include information about how to design and evaluate/improve the design of an RO system.  It will guide you on effectively reacting to system problems, so that they are correctly quickly and completely.

Instructors

Wes Byrne - President of CEA, Adjunct Professor at St. Cloud Technical College, Author of Reverse Osmosis, A Practical Guide for Industrial Users, Mr. Byrne has over 25 years experience in reverse osmosis and is a trained educator.  His courses are well known in the water treatment industry for being the best in the business.

Gary Shahan - Training Manager for CEA, Mr. Shahan has over 15 years in reverse osmosis, especially focused on RO training and troubleshooting.  Mr. Shahan was formerly the general manager at DHP.

Projects (subject to change)

I. Reverse Osmosis Pretreatment

1. Chlorine Reduction by Chemical Injection - Group will correctly dilute chemical in a day tank and set up an injection pump for removal of chlorine in a water system.

2. Pretreatment Evaluation - Group will apply instruments such as a turbidimeter and Silt Density Index (SDI) to evaluate the performance of pretreatment system components.

3. Pretreatment Contamination Analysis - Group will use analytical test kits to identify potential contaminants in water that may affect the RO system performance.

4. Micro/Ultrafiltration Membrane Cleaning - Cleaning procedures will be applied to a Pall Microza membrane system.

II. Reverse Osmosis Maintenance

1. Instrument Calibration - Group will calibrate pH, conductivity, flow rate, and pressure monitoring instruments.

2. Membrane Element Replacement & RO Adjustment - Group will replace an RO membrane element and correctly set the flow rates for a reverse osmosis system.

3. Data Normalization – Group will evaluate raw RO operating data using a computer program so as to determine when the system should be cleaned.

4. RO Cleaning/Sanitization – Group will clean/sanitize an RO system in an attempt to restore original system performance.

III. Reverse Osmosis Optimization

1. Pretreatment System Design – Group will evaluate the design of pretreatment system components and find potential modifications that would improve the performance.

2. RO System Design – Group will evaluate the design of a working RO system an determine ways to potentially improve its design.

3. Micro/Ultrafiltration Troubleshooting – Group will apply troubleshooting methods to isolate and repair a problem with a membrane system hollow fiber.

4. RO Troubleshooting: Fouling and Scale – Group will autopsy an inoperative RO membrane and determine the likely failure mechanism.

5. RO Troubleshooting: Salt Rejection Group will isolate an RO salt rejection problem in a working RO system and determine its likely cause.
